Tshwane Mayor calls for police intervention after municipal vehicles torched

Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink is calling for national police intervention, following the violence and torching of several municipal vehicles.

The Tshwane municipality says it has reasonable suspicions that this is linked to the labour strike, by South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) affiliated employees.

Tshwane MMC for community safety Grandi Theunissen says on Wednesday, a bakkie, four trucks and a bus were all damaged in incidents.

Four of these vehicles were subsequently torched.

At the same time, Tshwane has been forced to suspend its bus services, following the torching of several municipal vehicles.

Tshwane municipal workers downed tools back in July, after the city failed to implement a 5.4% wage increase for 2023.

The city has since been ordered by the South African Local Government Bargaining Council to honour the salary increases.

However, its arguing that the wage hike is unaffordable.

The metro now plans to appeal to the Labour Court.
