The cookie lady sold treats to pupils outside the primary school. But, that’s not all the woman (33) was selling to kids in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni. She was also selling muffins laced with dagga for R3 each.
Teachers became worried when they saw the little ones getting high, with others bunking classes. When they questioned the kids, they told them about the baker who was selling cookies.
Police and teachers were led to her house, where they found the muffins.
She admitted that she used dagga as one of the ingredients.
She was arrested on Friday, and appeared in court on Monday, 20 September.
Sergeant Lerato Mngomezulu from Tsakane Police Station said she would make her second appearance in two weeks. “She also planted dagga in her backyard,” she said.
Mngomezulu said the parents of a 12-year-old boy and his friends pointed the house out to the teachers and police.
“Some kids told parents that they were recruited to sell the cakes.”
Angry parents said the woman had turned their kids into addicts, and were worried about what would happen to them.
Parents have urged others to be vigilant and guard their children.
“If we don’t, people will use them for their selfish ends.
“We don’t want people like this in our communities. We can’t stand by and watch as our kids are turned into addicts.”
Mngomezulu said the suspect was charged with dealing in dagga.
Education spokesman Steve Mabona said the department was not aware of the incident, and wished for the law to take its course.
