MTN in talks with Icasa to keep emergency spectrum

MTN says it is in talks to convince the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa not to recall additional radio frequency spectrum. In April 2020, ICASA released emergency spectrum to help mobile operators accommodate the high demand for broadband during the lockdown.

It has decided to recall the emergency radio frequency spectrum it released to mobile operators in April 2020.

Jacqui O’Sullivan from MTN SA said, “[Icasa] has given us the ability to service South Africans better. Our ability, as MTN, to have given five million South African students and learners access to more than a thousand free education sites is a consequence of this [temporary spectrum access].

To remove the temporary spectrum while the pandemic is still in place and before we’ve had a chance to buy a full-time spectrum through an auction process, or some sort of process, is going to have an impact on the South Africans that we’re trying to serve.
