More than 800 motorists arrested for driving under the influence & excessive speeding across Joburg

More than 800 motorists arrested for driving under the influence & excessive speeding across Joburg! The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has intensified its operations across the city, targeting lawlessness, improving road safety, and addressing the rising number of serious and fatal accidents.
These efforts have already resulted in hundreds of arrests for reckless and dangerous driving practices, demonstrating the department’s commitment to safer roads.
Hundreds of Arrests in December and January
From December 1, 2024, to January 5, 2025, JMPD officers arrested a total of 512 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) and 364 drivers for excessive speeding. These figures underline the significant challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing dangerous driving habits across Johannesburg.
Superintendent Xolani Fihla, JMPD spokesperson, highlighted the severity of these offenses, emphasizing that such behaviors not only endanger the individuals involved but also put other road users at significant risk.
“Driving under the influence of alcohol poses serious dangers. Impaired judgement, slowed reaction times, and diminished coordination increase the likelihood of accidents, injuries, and fatalities,” said Fihla.
Region-Specific Statistics
The statistics reveal that some areas are more problematic than others.
- Region F, encompassing the Johannesburg CBD, Hillbrow, Yeoville, Kensington, Berea, Mayfair, Turffontein, and Rosettenville, recorded the highest number of DUI arrests, with over 300 motorists apprehended.
- Region D, which includes Soweto, followed with over 100 arrests for the same offense.
These areas are now a primary focus for JMPD’s ongoing operations.
The Dangers of Reckless Driving
Superintendent Fihla also warned about the risks of excessive speeding, stating that it is equally as hazardous as drunk driving.
“Excessive speeding drastically reduces a driver’s ability to respond to unforeseen circumstances, such as pedestrians, cyclists, or other vehicles, significantly increasing the severity of potential crashes,” he said.
Both offenses contribute to preventable loss of life, severe injuries, and long-term legal and emotional repercussions.
Consequences of Dangerous Driving:
- Legal penalties: Offenders face fines, imprisonment, and potential suspension or revocation of their driving licenses.
- Emotional toll: Accidents often have a profound psychological impact on victims, their families, and entire communities.
“These arrests serve as a stark reminder of the serious consequences associated with these offenses,” added Fihla.
Ongoing Efforts by JMPD
The JMPD has pledged to maintain and intensify its operations to ensure safer roads. These measures include:
- High-visibility patrols: Increased police presence deters reckless behavior.
- Roadblocks: Random checks are conducted to identify and apprehend offenders.
- Stop-and-search operations: Targeted enforcement in high-risk areas aims to address broader criminal activity.
The department is also collaborating with other law enforcement agencies and local communities to strengthen its efforts.
“The JMPD will continue to focus on high-risk areas, working alongside community members and other enforcement entities to ensure safety for all road users,” said Fihla.
Appeal to Road Users
Fihla issued a strong appeal to all road users to act responsibly and prioritize safety.
“The JMPD urges everyone to exercise caution, adhere to traffic laws, and ensure that road safety is a top priority,” he said.
With the alarming rate of accidents and fatalities, the department hopes these measures and continued public cooperation will result in a significant decline in road-related incidents.
Impact on Johannesburg
These intensified efforts by the JMPD underscore the importance of addressing reckless driving behavior in Johannesburg. Beyond ensuring safer roads, they aim to foster a culture of accountability and adherence to traffic laws.
As the operations continue, the JMPD’s commitment to public safety serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility among law enforcement, road users, and the broader community to create a safer environment for all.
