More rain expected in Eastern Cape

Several parts of the Eastern Cape will experience a wet weekend.

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) forecaster confirmed that the province will face more heavy rains.

These conditions are expected to continue through next week.

Speaking to the publication, SAWS forecaster Ishmael Moyo said there were scattered showers and thundershowers in the province on Friday, 24 March just spreading over the wild coast of the Eastern Cape.

Moyo said:

For today we still maintained 60% rainfall for most parts of the province but for the wild coast we had at least 80% chance of rain and showers. It has been raining throughout the day since the morning and we had a orange level 6 warning of disruptive rainfall today.

He said these conditions would continue through the weekend, including the new week with similar wet conditions.

“Going into tomorrow we have isolated showers and thundershowers except for the extreme western parts of the province.

“We have also received a level one yellow warning for several thunderstorms starting from the afternoon and expected over the North Western parts with strong winds along the coast.

“Sunday will see isolated showers and thundershowers except in the North Western parts,” he said.

Heavy rains fell in parts of the province.

On Thursday, 23 March residents of Port St Johns were left stranded after heavy rains swept their homes.

This havoc occurred just nearly a year after the flood-prone area was hit by heavy rains and flooding in 2022.

Video footage circulating on social media showed several vehicles submerged in water while pupils in uniform with their school bags were seen wading through the flooded area.

O.R. Tambo District municipal spokeswoman Zimkhita Macingwane, said Mayor Nomvuzo Mlombile-Cingo spent the day assessing the dire situation, and has provided assistance to those whose houses were swept away.
