Bheki Cele wants more boots on the ground

Police Minister Bheki Cele admits more must be done to tackle the country’s rising crime levels.

He says there are simply not enough officers for the population.

Cele also says budget cuts are putting a strain on efforts to fight crime.

The Minister was speaking on Power to Truth with JJ Tabane.

“Today we are about 180,000 police in a population of 60 million. That takes your human resource but also the money itself was cut,” he said.

Cele also said a host of new measures are being implemented to help victims reporting rape and gender-based violence to police stations.

Hundreds of police officers are being specially trained to deal with these matters.

Some officers have come under fire for their alleged lack of empathy for victims.

Cele says these officers will be dealt with.
