DA’s John Steenhuisen: Moonshot pact must be owned by the people of SA

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen said the moonshot pact needed to be more than just an anti-African National Congress (ANC) project if it wanted to capture the votes of South Africans.

Earlier in 2023, Steenhuisen announced a plan to gather all like-minded opposition parties in the country to form a coalition that would unseat the ANC from power after 2024’s general elections.

On Wednesday, seven political parties will be meeting in Kempton Park for a two-day convention, where they will be discussing the terms of the agreement and other issues for their coalition.

Speaking during a virtual address on Monday, Steenhuisen said after the convention, real, actionable solutions to the urgent problems that were facing the country needed to be tabled.

“If the pact emerges with a compelling vision to reduce unemployment, end load shedding, grow our economy, and tackle violent crime, then I ask that you get behind us.

“At the end of the day, this pact is not for politicians – the pact must be owned by the people of South Africa.”
