Jiba challenging Mokgoro Inquiry report

Prosecutor Nomgcobo Jiba says she will challenge the Mokgoro Inquiry report.

The Mokgoro Inquiry found Jiba and Lawrence Mrwebi unfit to hold office at the National Prosecuting Authority.

“I pleaded with the Inquiry to make recommendations that would strengthen the independence of the NPA to perform its supreme constitutional functions with industry and fortitude. I am disappointed by its failure to do so.

“There are numerous elementary but gross errors of judgment made by the inquiry that a review application to the High Court will demonstrate,” she said.

Jiba said in a statement that she stands by her evidence given to the inquiry and intends to ensure her actions were all done to advance prosecutorial independence and not to undermine them.

At the inquiry, a tearful Jiba told Justice Yvonne Mokgoro that she felt betrayed by her colleagues, and insisted she never took any dubious decisions.

Mrwebi meanwhile said the inquiry was unfair and felt like a targetted attack.

Freedom Under Law says the report and its findings bode well for restoring the integrity of the National Prosecuting Authority.

The Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution says the report reveals much more needs to be done to clean up the NPA.

President Cyril Ramaphosa fired Jiba on Friday.
