Gauteng Cogta MEC accuses DA of trying to collapse Mogale City

Gauteng Cooperative Governance MEC Mzi Khumalo accused the Democratic Alliance (DA) of playing political games in a bid to collapse Mogale City.
This as three motions of no-confidence finally made it onto its council’s agenda for Wednesday.
The DA and its coalition partners have thwarted several bids by the African National Congress (ANC) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the city to bring motions against Speaker Jacqueline Pannal, mayor Tyrone Gray and chief whip Lesego Lekoto to council.
It seems a decision to allow the motions to be heard came on the back of Pannal firing 41 ANC and EFF councillors.
It’s a decision which put the city on a collision course with Khumalo.
Khumalo has since reversed the decision, calling it unlawful.
Mogale City is the fourth Gauteng metro to be thrust into a tussle for power between a tense ANC-EFF partnership versus the DA and its coalition partners.
Attempts to get the programming committee to put this matter on the agenda have failed no less than three times.
This time around, it seems the DA and its partners were willing to allow for the debates, believing they had successfully gotten rid of 41 opposing councillors.
Khumalo said this move was simply unlawful.
“It’s a political bid to try and collapse the council, however, what they are forgetting is if the majority of councillors have been fired in that municipality, there is no more a municipality.”
The city is also under pressure to address outstanding matters ahead of adopting an adjustment budget. Failure to do this will see the provincial government getting involved in its affairs.
Khumalo is due to meet with both the Speaker and political parties ahead of Wednesday’s sitting.
