Mmusi Maimane resigns as DA leader

Mmusi Maimane has resigned as leader of the Democratic Alliance. Maimane made the announcement at a media briefing at the party’s headquarters in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

“I will today step down as leader of the DA. I’ll continue my role as a parliamentary leader if the party makes that decision until the end of the year.”

His resignation follows that of Herman Mashaba as Johannesburg mayor and from the party.

Maimane was elected leader of the party in 2015 succeeding Helen Zille. I’ve always been friends with MashabaThe DA’s organisational review panel recently described Maimane as inconsistent, indecisive and conflict-averse.

The report was commissioned by Maimane and authored by former DA leader Tony Leon.

The panel recommended training for leaders on how to lead a diverse group of people.

In other news – Athol Trollip joins Maimane in resigning from DA

Federal Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance Athol Trollip has announced his resignation from the position. Trollip’s resignation follows that of Mmusi Maimane who announced his resignation a few minutes earlier.

In his resignation speech to the media, Trollip cited that said he is taking full responsibility for the party’s poor showing in the 2019 general election. Read more
