Mitchells Plain CPF wants community & faith-based organisations to help fight gang violence

The Mitchells Plain Community Policing Forum (CPF) is calling on all local community and faith-based organizations to jointly fight gang violence in the suburb.

In the space of a month, eight people were gunned down in Mitchells Plain in a resurgence of gun violence.

Six young people, between 15 and 24 years old, were killed in two mass shootings in Tafelsig and Rocklands.

A man, believed to be one of those accused of being involved in a R1 billion tender fraud case within the city’s Human Settlements directorate, was shot and killed on Thursday.

Mitchells Plain CPF Spokesperson, Norman Jantjes, said, “You can’t just address it through law enforcement, you need an integrated approach because gangsterism is attractive. So, you need to come up with alternatives to gangsterism.

“Our youth are eager to do other things, like play sports. We also have a high unemployment rate in Mitchells Plain, and a high school dropout rate. If we are not going to address those things, we might as well forget addressing the gang problem.”
