Missing girl’s head found in the river

Just a few hours into the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, a six-year-old girl was brutally killed in Estcourt in the KZN midlands on Thursday, 25 November.

The 20-year-old suspect was arrested after he allegedly beheaded the girl in KwaSobalili. The head of the girl was found by residents at a local river on Saturday, 27 November.

KZN Social Development MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza said the girl’s body was found in a rondavel with her head missing.

“It is alleged that the suspect had a confrontation with the girl’s uncle before the murder,” said Khoza.

He allegedly secretly entered the rondavel in which the child was sleeping and was noticed running out with a plastic bag dripping blood.

Khoza sent her heartfelt condolences to the Shabalala family. She said it was very hard to comprehend how a person could resort to killing an innocent child in this barbaric way.

A team of social workers was assigned to the family and gave support to the family. The MEC said the team would also visit the girl’s school and provide counselling to the teachers and pupils.

Khoza applauded the police for their swift response in the case.

She called on the National Prosecuting Authority to ensure that the suspect doesn’t get bail, is speedily prosecuted, and handed a heavy sentence.

KZN police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala said: “A murder case was opened at Estcourt Police Station. The suspect was later arrested on the same day. He appeared in the Estcourt Magistrates Court on Monday, 30 November.

The case was postponed to next Thursday for a formal bail application.”
