COVID-19: Minister Nathi Mthethwa defends govt relief process

Sports and Arts and Culture Minister, Nathi Mthethwa says the government has assisted many artists affected by the COVID-19 lockdown.

Mthethwa defended the department’s stance after some well-known artists claimed the relief process was flawed. He says the focus was given to vulnerable artists.

“There are people in this space who get nothing whatsoever. We’ve gone for the most vulnerable, there is nothing flawed about that. Desperation levels are not the same. We would have wished to cover others.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa is at 92,681. The country has recorded over 50,000 recoveries.

More than 1.2-million tests have been conducted.
