Mine workers’ safety in sharp focus

The National Union of Mineworkers says more needs to be done to protect and save the lives of mine workers.
The union, which represents thousands of workers in the mining sector, believes not enough is being done to address safety for miners underground.
Members marched on Saturday to try and get the attention of mining bosses at Sibanye Stillwater and Harmony Gold.
It’s calling on technology to be used underground.
Both mining companies have agreed to respond within 14 days to the demands set out by the union.
They say safety for mineworkers remains a top priority.
NUM says it will not back down until measures are put in place to further address safety.
