Milnerton High has come under intense scrutiny after a disturbing video showing eight of its students violently assaulting a fellow learner surfaced online. The video, which has now gone viral, shows the teenage learners attacking another boy using belts, a hosepipe, and what appears to be a large stick.
The incident has led to swift action from Milnerton High School authorities, who have identified and suspended the eight students involved. Letters of suspension have been issued, and disciplinary hearings are reportedly underway.
According to Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), the school is treating the matter with the utmost seriousness.
“The school is treating this with the seriousness it deserves and has acted upon the allegations and the video that has emerged,” Hammond stated.
Activists Call for Accountability at Milnerton High
Community activist Lucinda Evans, known for her advocacy work in Cape Town, condemned the assault in the strongest terms. She emphasized that the fact that the suspects are minors should not diminish the severity of the act.
“The video speaks for itself. It is violent. It is malicious. There is intent,” said Evans.
The footage clearly shows the victim being overpowered and repeatedly beaten while several others stand by and watch. Evans expressed concern that those who were present but failed to intervene or notify a teacher should also be held accountable.
“Anyone who took part in or witnessed the assault without taking action to help the boy or alert educators at the school ought to be expelled.”
She added that the students involved are reportedly part of the school’s first rugby team and hold an “elite” status at Milnerton High, suggesting a possible culture of impunity.
“This was not a random act. They’re the first team. They’ve got some elite status at the school.”
In a powerful message directed at the parents of the perpetrators and bystanders, Evans urged them to take responsibility.
“Keep your children at home, so that every single victim that has ever been hurt by your son can continue their schooling in peace.”
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm has been opened and is currently under investigation. Despite this, Evans expressed skepticism about whether justice will be served, noting law enforcement’s hesitance to act decisively when minors are involved.
“The police are very reluctant to open up a case when it’s minors,” she said.
Nonetheless, SAPS has stated that arrests could follow depending on the outcome of the investigation and the evidence provided in the viral footage.
The incident has prompted broader questions about the culture within Milnerton High and whether enough is being done to protect learners and foster a safe educational environment. The school’s prompt response to suspend the students has been seen as a step in the right direction, but many feel more decisive action is needed.
Parents and community members are demanding a thorough investigation not only into the incident itself but into the conditions that allowed such violence to occur on school grounds.
Calls are growing for the school to implement stronger anti-bullying policies, provide support for victims of violence, and ensure that educators are trained to intervene before such situations escalate.
As the disciplinary hearings proceed, the suspended students will face consequences under the school’s code of conduct. The Western Cape Education Department is also expected to provide oversight and ensure that due process is followed.
This incident has become a flashpoint for conversations about violence in schools, peer pressure, and the role of social media in exposing — and sometimes escalating — harmful behavior among teenagers.
Milnerton High now stands at a crossroads. The way school leadership, parents, and the education department respond in the coming days will not only determine the fate of those involved in the assault but will also shape the school’s reputation and the safety of its learners going forward.
The assault at Milnerton High School has shocked the community and the country at large. As investigations continue and the school navigates its internal disciplinary processes, one thing is clear: violence of this nature cannot be tolerated in educational spaces.
For real change to occur, accountability must be matched with preventative action. Whether Milnerton High can emerge from this crisis stronger and more committed to protecting its learners remains to be seen — but the world is watching.
