Memorial service planned for five slain children

A memorial service is being planned for the five children who were killed when a truck plunged through the fence of Vyfhoek Primary school in Potchefstroom.
The school is located right next to the N12 highway.
Four more pupils were injured and two are in critical condition.
On Friday, pupils of Vyfhoek Primary were waiting here for their transport back home but their school day ended in tragedy when a truck plunged through the fence.
The truck’s tyre presumably burst, causing the driver to lose control.
One of the deceased is six-year-old Palesa Thekiso.
Her distraught father was at work when he heard about the accident.
Tshepo Thekiso recalled, “that’s when I had to rush to the school and find out what’s going on. It was a horrific wait for three hours plus, not knowing what’s going on.”
“I couldn’t ask much questions as I didn’t have the strength to do so. All I was doing was praying and hoping she’s okay.”
Their home is now empty without their middle child and only daughter.
He said, “she brought a smile to a lot of people. The one thing I would remember about her is that she would lend her mother’s phone to take videos, she believed that one day she would have a YouTube channel, she was a blogger.”
“She would change her clothes every now and then and wear different outfits and how beautiful she is.”
The school community is shattered, with teachers and pupils receiving counseling.
North West Education spokesperson Elias Malindi said, “we are very much saddened by this unfortunate tragic that has happened. In fact this is for the first time in the entire education sector within our province to experience such a horrific accident like this one.”
“At the moment the learners have been relocated to another school nearby because we did not want to expose them this environment for now.”
Counselling will continue on Monday. The driver of the truck is unharmed and the police are investigating the crash.
