Conducting site visits and inspections to ensure compliance with the contract current legislation and Stellenbosch University standards, policy specification and drawings;
Compiling regular reports, recommendations and remedial measures with respect to compliance, projects and utilities;
Assisting and advising contractors on site, on matters related to quality control and the compliance to specification of standards of contracts documents;
Attending project conception, design and site meetings;
Liaising with FM project teams as required;
Preparing reports on progress, site activities and all other related issues;
Ensuring that agreed SU Policies, DCD documents and regulations are met in the performance of the duties of the post;
Undertaking any necessary training and development as deemed relevant to the duties and responsibilities of the post;
Assisting SU FM in providing training and development activities for other employees;
Adhering to existing working practices, methods, procedures, undertaking relevant training and development activities and to respond proactively to new and alternative systems;
Understanding and ensuring that SU complies with local government legislation;
Working with information, technology and associated systems in accordance with SU policies;
Managing mechanical engineering human resource objectives by recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, assigning, scheduling, coaching, counselling, and disciplining employees; communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions; planning and reviewing compensation actions; enforcing policies and procedures;
Ensuring that FM achieves mechanical engineering operational objectives by contributing mechanical engineering information and recommendations to strategic plans and reviews; preparing and completing action plans; implementing production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; resolving problems; completing audits; identifying trends; determining administrative system improvements; implementing change;
Assisting with and developing strategic mechanical plans by studying operational plans; studying existing conditions; determining needs to accomplish operational plans; mapping solutions; updating and modifying requirements and solutions; preparing cost estimates and budgets;
Maintaining a risk free, safe and healthy work environment by establishing, following, and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with codes and legal regulations;
Maintaining mechanical systems by establishing and enforcing preventive and on-going maintenance, and testing programmes; scheduling repairs; coordinating shut-downs and installations;
Liaising with building occupants to understand their needs and issues for comfort heating and cooling, balancing these requirements with the need for energy costs savings and reductions in environmental emissions aligned with the SU’s environmental policy and strategy;
Working with the Stellenbosch electrical engineer to maintain the agreed monitoring and targeting software;
Investigating reasons for excessive consumption and proposing solutions;
Ensuring the correct operation of the BMS, with particular reference to energy efficiency, and seeking to identify improved energy saving strategies and equipment life cycle costs;
Managing the implementation, monitoring and reporting on the effectiveness of the changes made;
Driving the occupational health and safety in the department and assisting with documentation and compliance;
Utilities management: Energy management to implement strategies that will reduce the total cost of electricity and the institution’s carbon footprint;
Managing the implementation of the plant consolidation strategy.
Required Skills
Understanding and implementing mechanical equipment and design including HVAC and ventilation equipm
MS Office, Outlook, Excel
Good knowledge of electrical load demand and control, including BMS and metering
Candidate Requirements
Understanding and implementing mechanical equipment and design including HVAC and ventilation equipment and controls;
Ten years’ working experience on projects/construction sites;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Excellent computer literacy (MS Office, Outlook, Excel);
Skills: effective planning, problem-solving, decision making and time management, root cause analysis;
Good analytical ability;
Accurate record-keeping skills;
Ability to work independently;
Ability to work under pressure;
Organised with good interpersonal relationships;
Good knowledge of electrical load demand and control, including BMS and metering;
Work experience with BMS systems.
Recommendation:

National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or BTech;
Full bilingualism (English and Afrikaans);
Ten years’ experience in a construction/project environment;
A degree in Mechanical Engineering will be advantageous;
Proven ability to work both independently and as member of a team;
Ability to develop and maintain positive working partnerships within FM divisions, SU clients and service providers;
Ability to function under pressure without compromising accuracy;
Excellent communication and liaison skills and experience;
Valid code EB driver’s licence.
