Video: Drama as Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane goes partying after telling South Africans to follow Covid-19 rules

When KZN entered into the Covid-19 third wave earlier this month, Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu was extremely worried about the increasing number of positive cases.
She called on people to adhere to all Covid-19 regulations including wearing masks and observing social distancing.
But Simelane-Zulu was later caught on camera not adhering to the regulations.
In the video, where she was allegedly celebrating her birthday with friends, they were not observing any social distancing or wearing masks.

Simelane-Zulu has since come under fire for failing to practice what she preached.
The IFP now wants the ANC to take harsh disciplinary measures against her.
IFP Health spokeswoman in KZN Legislature, Ncamisile Nkwanyana, said they were shocked by the negligence displayed by some ANC members.
“The visuals of them blatantly flouting Covid-19 regulations, which are currently being widely circulated on social media, are a testimony to their complete disregard for the rule of law, as well as the safety of their fellow South Africans.
“This most unfortunate incident occurred at the height of the third wave with new cases escalating daily. As we speak, KZN recorded more than 3 000 new daily cases,” she said.
Nkwanyana called on the ANC leadership in the province to implement harsh disciplinary measures against the MEC and other ANC officials in the video.
Simelane-Zulu has since came out to defend herself.
She explained that she accepted an invitation to a purported meeting, which turned out to be a surprise lunch for her birthday.
She further explained that the lunch took place at a private venue and was organized and attended by close family and friends.
Upon her arrival, she first expressed her surprise and noted there was adequate social distancing.
She then personally conducted a headcount of those who were in attendance, which showed there were 36 people on site.
She went on to encourage those in attendance to adhere to social distancing and constantly use the hand sanitisers freely available at the venue.
Simelane-Zulu said there was a time during a brief musical performance where guests stood up and danced, unfortunately without wearing their masks.
She said she deeply regretted the failure by some of the attendees, including herself, to wear masks during this short performance.
She then promised to submit a formal report to the premier regarding this incident.
KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala expressed that he viewed the allegations in a very serious light.
“I have since received an immediate preliminary verbal briefing from the MEC in respect to these allegations.
“We will keep citizens abreast once all relevant details are presented on this serious matter of public importance,” said Zikalala.
