Workers want a meaningful increase, says Numsa

Numsa says its workers in steel and engineering companies are fed up and they want a meaningful increase from employers.
The metalworker’s union held its national strike day on Tuesday,
Workers are demanding an eight-percent wage increase.
“This is a national strike, Numsa has called for a national strike in the engineering sector and the reason for this is because we deadlocked with employers in the metals and engineering and industries council, all employers and all our members are fed up with the fact that the employers are refusing to give us a meaningful increase,” said Numsa spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi.
“We are demanding an eight-percent increase across the board for the first year, as well CPI plus two-percent for the second and third year and they are offering 4.4% in the first year as well as CPI and one-percent in the second year and CPI plus 0.5% in the third year. Now for our members, this is completely unacceptable.”
