The cultural and creative art industry in KZN is mourning the death of Mduduzi “Mkhaya” Jali (65). Family spokesman Richard Jali told the publication that Mkhaya died on Friday, 28 January after a short illness.
“In the last two months he’s been in and out of the hospital. He was eventually admitted twice to the Intensive Care Unit at King Edward Hospital. This is devastating news for us as the family. Our hearts are bleeding and we’re not sure if we’ll ever heal,” said Richard.
He described Mkhaya as an energetic and bubbly person. “We will surely miss him because he was a unifier, he loved his family. He had a good sense of humour and there was never a dull moment when he was around. During family gatherings, he was our main man.
“He’d take the centre stage in organizing family functions. Now that he’s gone, we don’t know who’ll take up that role,” said Richard.
“From a very young age, Mkhaya chose art and he was committed to his craft until his last days. He worked with various institutions including Ukhozi FM, Durban’s Playhouse, Satmas to name a few. The creative industry and the family have really lost a hero,” he said.
He said the funeral service will be on Sunday, 6 February.
“The funeral will be on Sunday at Church of God-Madundube KwaMashu D section in Durban. His memorial service will be held after the funeral. Due to time constraints, we decided to do the memorial services after the funeral. This is also because we want to focus on his funeral thereafter his memorial. Details about his memorial service will be announced at the funeral,” he said.
Mkhaya is survived by three sisters and one child.
