While Gauteng’s matric pass rate improved, more still needs to be done – says MEC Chiloane

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said that although there was an improvement in the province’s matric pass rate, more still needed to be done.
Gauteng achieved an 85.4% pass rate, which was a one percent improvement from 2022.
However, the province lost out on the number two spot to KwaZulu-Natal, which achieved an 86.4% pass rate.
On Friday, Chiloane and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi gifted the province’s top achievers with bursaries at a celebratory event in Bryanston.
Chiloane said his department would take a hardened approach to improving 2024’s results.
“As a province, we’ve attended to a matter of schools that consistently performed below par. The issue of underperforming schools must also be resolved as 34 public and independent schools achieved less than 65%, compared to 53 last year. The next few days we will have an engagement with them to deal with those challenges.”
