Marking of matric exams to get underway this week

The 2021 matric exams will officially wrap up this week.

Marking will get underway on 8 December.

With so many new Covid-19 cases, preventative measures have been put in place for markers.

Markers have been urged to get vaccinated before reporting for duty.

Teacher union Sadtu’s Mugwena Maluleke said the union is going to meet regarding mandatory vaccinations.

“We are very clear, as the leadership of Sadtu, that vaccination is the way to go,” Maluleke said.

Sadtu has made a joint submission with Neptosa to the Education Department calling for teachers to produce a negative test result before they are granted access to any of the marking centres.

They are also calling for testing centres to be erected on marking sites.

The Education Department said only 15 markers will be allowed to operate in each room at marking sites.

Spokesperson Elijah Maghlangu said officials will visit all 193 marking centres across the country to ensure that COVID-19 protocols are followed.
