Marikana protesters take their grievances to Parliament

On Tuesday, the country marks 10 years since the Marikana massacre. In 2012, mine workers went on strike for a living wage but many mine workers and mining communities continue to struggle. They have now taken their grievances to Parliament and are vowing to stay there until they are resolved.
The Mining Affected Communities’ Meshack Mbangula said: “Today, we must remember that it is the day that Marikana workers were massacred in 2012.
“We have other comrades who were killed on this day. Marikana people were merely asking for a decent wage, a living wage, but were killed. The very same people who were involved like Cyril Rampahosa, today is the president.
“For killing people, he was honoured to be President, so we feel that it was important that we raise the issue that mining affected people are dying because of pollution, contaminated water, forcefully removed. We are on our own, so we are here to address exactly that.
