The state did not oppose bail, despite them facing a schedule six offence for the murder of inmate Mpho Mkhumbeni and assaulting three of his cellmates during a raid at the prison last month.

Investigating officer Sergeant Kendrick Barnes took to the stand, providing reasons as to why the state was not opposing their bail.

He says only one statement is outstanding to conclude their investigation into the matter.

“I’m not opposed with their release on bail for the following reasons. They are not a flight risk. On the day of the arrest, they were already waiting for me at their addresses because they were saying they knew we were going to come.”
