Man City Hold Psychological Edge in Premier League Title Race, Says Rooney

Former England captain Wayne Rooney believes Manchester City will have a crucial psychological advantage in the ongoing Premier League title race, particularly as the season approaches a निर्णनिंग stage.

League leaders Arsenal currently sit six points clear at the top of the table, although they have played one game more than their closest rivals. The two sides are set to meet in a high-stakes clash at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, a match widely seen as a potential title decider.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney highlighted the importance of experience and composure, suggesting that Manchester City’s track record could prove decisive.

According to Rooney, Man City’s familiarity with winning league titles gives them a clear mental edge over Arsenal. Under the guidance of manager Pep Guardiola, City have consistently demonstrated the ability to handle pressure during crucial stages of the season.

Man City’s Experience Could Decide the Title Race

“I think City will have the edge on that, just purely the manager and players they’ve got,” Rooney explained. “They know how to win the title and have a manager who knows how to do it.”

He added that City’s players are more likely to remain calm under pressure, while Arsenal’s relatively younger squad could feel the strain as expectations rise.

Rooney pointed out that when teams begin to lose momentum, doubts can quickly creep in. “When you go on a run and lose a few games, you start thinking, ‘where’s the next goal, the next win going to come from?’ That negative mindset really has an impact on your performance,” he said.

Recent results have only intensified the title race. Manchester City strengthened their position with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Chelsea, while Arsenal suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth.

These outcomes have shifted momentum slightly in City’s favour heading into Sunday’s showdown. Rooney believes the winner of that match will likely emerge as favourites to lift the trophy at the end of the season.

“This game is massive,” he said. “Whoever wins will be favourites to go on and win the league.”

He also suggested that a draw could be a valuable result for Arsenal, given the circumstances.

Rooney emphasised that Arsenal may need to adopt a more pragmatic approach if they are to contain Man City’s attacking threat. Under manager Mikel Arteta, Arsenal have built a reputation for attractive, attacking football—but Rooney believes flexibility will be key.

“They have to be tough to break down, make sure there’s no gaps between the lines and try to hit them on the break,” he advised.

He went further, suggesting that Arsenal might need to embrace a less glamorous style if it means securing a crucial result.

“Whether the fans like that type of football or not, they have to do anything to stop City winning. They need to be resilient enough to stop City from scoring.”

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur are facing a very different battle—one for survival. Spurs ended the weekend in the relegation zone after a disappointing defeat to Sunderland, combined with West Ham United securing a win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Rooney described Tottenham’s performance in the north east as “a bit flat,” noting that they failed to show the energy typically associated with a new manager’s arrival. Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi recently took charge, but the expected immediate improvement has yet to materialise.

“Sometimes you get a bounce when a new manager comes in,” Rooney said. “But that usually happens when the team is aggressive and on the front foot. I thought they were a bit in between.”

Tottenham’s struggles have been particularly concerning, as they have yet to register a Premier League win in 2026. Rooney warned that relegation would be disastrous for the club, both on and off the pitch.

“It will be a disaster for them if they do go down,” he said. “Some of those players might already be thinking that if the club goes down, they can move on.”

He also stressed the importance of an immediate turnaround, warning that failure to secure promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt would create long-term problems.

“If they don’t get back in the Premier League in the first year, that will be an absolute nightmare,” he added.

Tottenham’s next opportunity to change their fortunes comes against Brighton & Hove Albion. Rooney believes that securing a win—no matter how it comes—could be vital for restoring confidence within the squad.

“They have to find a way to win,” he said. “If they can do that, they give themselves a chance. But the longer it goes without winning, the more difficult it becomes.”

As the Premier League season heads toward its conclusion, the contrast between the title race and the relegation battle could not be more stark. At the top, Manchester City and Arsenal are locked in a fierce contest where experience and mentality may prove decisive.

Meanwhile, at the bottom, Tottenham Hotspur are fighting to avoid a shocking سقوط into the Championship. With pressure mounting on all fronts, every match now carries enormous significance.

For Rooney, however, one thing is clear—when it comes to the title race, Man City’s experience, composure, and winning mentality could ultimately make the difference.
