Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena opens Footballer of the Season debate

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena opens the Footballer of the Season debate. The reigning DStv Premiership champions came away as the big winners for the league’s December awards after Mokwena and co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi walked away as Coach of the Month, while Andile Jali was named Player of the Month.

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena has opened the debate on the PSL Footballer of the Season award. Jali overcame competition from the likes of Victor Letsoalo, Kwane Peprah, Eva Nga and teammate Peter Shalulile to claim the honour, and is now the frontrunner for the glamorous Footballer of the Year crown according to his coach.

“What is important is that we continue to work in this way [as a team] and if we continue to work in this way then maybe the debate will start,” Mokwena said.

“I’m very surprised that with AJ’s performances, and with Mshishi [Themba Zwane]’s consistency and performances, we haven’t started the debate about the Footballer of the Season. I am very surprised.

“Hopefully, now that AJ has won Footballer of the Month, and rightfully so, I’m not sure many he has won now already, the reflection of his performance can not be based on these awards [alone] but based [also] on the Man of the Match awards that he has already chalked up and the consistency of his performances.

“Maybe now we can start the talk of, ‘Is Andile Jali the Footballer of the Season so far?’ and I would be very surprised if we don’t start that talk.”
