Mabuza and Gordhan respond to stage 6 load-shedding

Eskom‘s upper echelons believe they have not failed the country. The power utility on Monday announced that it was moving load-shedding to stage 6. Eskom says heavy rainfall and a problem at Medupi Power Station contributed to stage 6. Eskom board chairperson and acting CEO Jabu Mabuza says stage 6 “is not a calamity.

“I don’t think we’re failing. I think some of the reasons we find ourselves is mainly the unreliability of the plant owing to maintenance not being done. The situation we find ourselves today is to make sure it’s controlled load-shedding. Stage 6 is not a calamity. It’s controlled to protect the system from total blackout. Meanwhile, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan said some tough questions have to be asked.

Deputy President David Mabuza

“We have to ask a lot of questions, about how do we get, what I call partials that are off-grid at the moment or offline. How do we improve the level of maintenance? How do we get better quality of repair work done on some of the boiler tube leaks and other technical problems that we have? And ho do we recover from the flooded power stations as well.” Our goal is to get to normality,” added Gordhan. Gordhan said load-shedding was not in a big crisis but rather a “manageable crisis.
