Lusikisiki mass shooting trial set for February, alleged mastermind to conduct his own defence

Lusikisiki mass shooting trial set for February, alleged mastermind to conduct his own defence! The trial of seven men charged with the murder of 18 people in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape, has been scheduled for February 17 to February 28, 2025.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed the dates and stated that all necessary preparations for the trial are underway.
Massacre Shocks Community
The killings, which occurred on September 28, 2024, claimed the lives of 15 women and three men, including a 14-year-old boy, leaving the Lusikisiki community devastated.
The murders were carried out in two separate shooting incidents, but the motive behind the mass killings has not yet been disclosed.
Police investigations have suggested that the attacks were orchestrated from inside a prison, with one of the accused already serving time for a prior murder conviction. Another suspect is a parolee, having been released from prison after serving time for murder.
Police Search for Eighth Suspect
Authorities are continuing their investigation and have issued a warrant of arrest for an eighth suspect who remains at large.
The seven individuals currently in custody and charged in connection with the massacre are:
- Mzukisi Ndamase (46)
- Siphosoxolo Myekethe (45)
- Aphiwe “AP” Ndende (25)
- Lwando Antony Abi (33)
- Bonga Hintsa (31)
- Zenande Paya (38)
- Mawethu Nomdlembu (36)
Charges Filed Against the Accused
The accused face a combined 19 counts of murder, including one additional count linked to a separate case in KwaBhaca. They are also charged with the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
According to NPA spokesperson Luxolo Tyali, the additional murder count relates to a separate incident that has been connected to the accused through further investigations.
Court Proceedings
The case has progressed with the prosecution furnishing the defence attorneys of six accused with the docket contents. The seventh accused, Mzukisi Ndamase, who has elected to conduct his own defence, has been given until December 12, 2024, to review the docket and prepare for trial.
Ndamase, alleged to have been the mastermind behind the massacre, was apprehended while serving a life sentence plus 15 years for murder and robbery at a Correctional Services facility.
Bail and Readiness for Trial
All seven accused have abandoned their right to apply for bail, a move that indicates the seriousness of the charges they face.
In a statement, the NPA expressed confidence in the readiness of the state to proceed with the trial, confirming that investigations have been finalized and all necessary evidence has been secured.
The Path to Justice
This trial represents a crucial step toward justice for the victims and their families. The September massacre has left a profound impact on the Lusikisiki community, and the proceedings will likely bring critical details about the motive and orchestration of the attacks to light.
Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information regarding the whereabouts of the eighth suspect, as they work to ensure accountability for all involved.
As the February trial date approaches, the case stands as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by organized crime and violence in South Africa, and the importance of a robust justice system in addressing such heinous acts.
