Girl from same school as Lufuno Mavhunga who was raped by her teacher finally speaks out
A former Mbilwi Secondary School pupil in Limpopo has been applauded for her bravery.
This after she reported her rape ordeal three years after it happened.
She was allegedly raped on several occasions by her teacher in 2018 while she was in grade 12.
The teacher was arrested on Friday, 14 May, and appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrates Court yesterday.
The case was postponed to 24 May.
According to the Human Rights Commission manager in Limpopo, Victor Mavhidula, the victim who’s now 20 years old allegedly told the principal about the incident, but was told to keep her mouth shut.
Mavhidula told the publication they visited the school after the bullying, which resulted in the suicide of Lufuno Mavhunga.
“Upon investigating, we learned there were issues the school management failed to attend to. We called on all pupils whose matters were not attended to come forward anonymously.
“A whistleblower close to the victim made us aware of this rape ordeal. We met with the victim for more details and later met with the police where a case was opened. We just want justice for the victim.”
Mavhidula said the victim was psychologically strained and asked the Limpopo Department of Social Development to offer her counselling.
The teacher allegedly raped the victim twice at a local lodge after he lured her there under the pretence of helping her with extra lessons.
He allegedly also raped her at his house.
Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said cops only became aware of the matter last month when the commission reported the incident.
“We acted quickly and arrested the suspect based on the evidence we were given,” said Mojapelo.
“There’s no way the police can turn back victims of rape without any help, irrespective of who’s involved.”
