Lower data prices are coming

Data prices look like they will finally fall. The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has released guidelines for the licensing of spectrum.s The licensing is set to increase competition between the major network providers and lower the cost of data for consumers.

The release of spectrum has been marred by delays and court battles between Icasa and the communication ministry.

Spectrum has been limited in South Africa because digital migration has been delayed for years.b Data prices could fall by as much as 25 percent in the next three years and contribute almost 0.6 percent to economic growth if spectrum is released, according to Treasury.
