Hundreds of people from around Cape Town have bid farewell to Lonwabo Jack, who was killed on his birthday in Nyanga last month. The 22-year-old was raped and murdered in Mau Mau, Nyanga on 16 April while celebrating his birthday at a friend’s place.
Many people filled the streets as they bid farewell to Lonwabo who was buried at Delft Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, 1 May. The LGBTIQ+ community gave him a befitting send-off as they sang and danced with a rainbow flag at the graveyard. Familiar faces that attended the funeral included celebrities such as Thami Kotlolo and Ayanda Makuzeni, former Hectic 99 presenter.
Speaking to the SunTeam, Lonwabo’s father Mziwabantu Ntuli (45) said he was happy for the support he got from the public but devastated to lose his son at a tender age. “I never thought that I would bury my son. What happened is devastating. I’m heartbroken but God will heal me,” he said. `
Anele Sibamba from Triangle Project, an organisation that advocates for the rights of the LGBTIQ+ community, said South Africans made it possible for Lonwabo to have a descend burial.
“After I heard about Lonwabo’s death, I went to the scene and saw that indeed he was dead. I went to his family and I knew they needed help so they gave me permission to mobilise funds. I had set my own targets in my mind but actually went the extra mile. As LGBTIQ+, we strive as always to provide one of us a dignified burial,” said Sibamba.
Kotlolo said: “It’s quite scary that we find ourselves in this situation. There’s another person being buried in Limpopo today. It’s sad to know that we’re dealing with hate crimes in the country. What’s more disappointing is that the justice system has failed many of our queer community. There are so many cases that remain unsolved. This spate of killings brings back trauma to families who never got justice.”
Bishop Mthuthuzeli Williams from Christian Fellowship Ministries said: “Killing gays and lesbians is inhuman because God said thou shalt not kill.
It ended there. It’s a simple instruction from our Creator. Don’t kill. We are all humans and judging is for God not us.”
