Police arrest suspect after Limpopo villagers chase down violent ATM robbers

A dramatic chase through Nkuzana village in Limpopo ended in the arrest of a 26-year-old robbery suspect on Friday night, October 11.
The man was cornered by quick-acting community members after he and three accomplices allegedly robbed and stabbed a 20-year-old victim near a local ATM.
The victim had just withdrawn money at a local ATM when he was accosted by four armed suspects. One of the suspects, holding a firearm, demanded the victim’s cellphone, bank card, and cash. The suspects then allegedly stabbed the victim on the back before running away, said police spokersperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
The injured victim managed to alert nearby residents, who gave chase and managed to catch one of the suspects before police arrived on the scene.
“The police were called and swiftly arrived at the scene to rescue the suspect, who was being assaulted by community members. He was then transported to the hospital under police guard,” said Ledwaba.
The suspect will appear before the Hlanganani Magistrate’s Court once he recovers, facing charges of robbery with a firearm.
The remaining three suspects are still on the run, and a manhunt is ongoing.
Limpopo police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe urged the public to avoid taking matters into their own hands, saying they must cooperate with law enforcements during such incidents.
