Christopher Mokgomutsi (42) was sentenced to two life terms and a combined 55 years imprisonment for his involvement in a farm attack at Draaifontein farm in the Molemole Local Municipality in Limpopo on August 3, 2020.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the jail terms handed to Mokgomutsi by the Limpopo High Court: Polokwane Division on Friday.
Mokgomutsi was the last of four men accused of the attack to be sentenced.
The men stormed Draaifontein farm and assaulted an 62-year-old farmer, leaving him unconscious. Two of them then raped the farmer’s 61-year-old wife, before taking a hunting rifle and a pistol and fleeing the scene in the victim’s bakkie.
They were cornered at the Polokwane traffic circle by the Limpopo Special Task Force.
When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the men fired shots at the police, who retaliated, resulting in one suspect’s death and the arrest of the other three.
Police recovered the stolen vehicle, firearms, and jewellery.
Two of the accused, Aaron Mabena (22) and Nicolus Tlou (33) pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 10 years and life imprisonment, respectively, in 2021.
Mabena was sentenced for house robbery, attempted murder, and theft of firearms, while Tlou was sentenced for rape, house robbery, attempted murder, and theft of firearms.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased suspect and Tlou were the ones who committed the rape.
The case against Mokgomutsi was handled by Mogwadi police’s Detective Warrant Officer Khomotjo Morathi.
Mokgomutsi was sentenced as follows:
- Count 1: Robbery with aggravating circumstances: 20 years
- Count 2: Rape: Life imprisonment
- Count 3: Attempted murder: 10 years
- Count 4: Attempted murder: 10 years
- Count 5: Possession of a firearm: 10 years
