The Chief Albert Luthuli Regional Court sitting at Elukwatini in Mpumalanga has sentenced a Swazi national to life imprisonment for raping his 13-year-old granddaughter in Mayflower in February 2019.
According to police, the victim notified her mother after the incident occurred, who immediately reported the matter.
The case was transferred to Family Violence, Child Protection and S.e.xual Offences Unit (FCS) in Elukwatini.
Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the investigators managed to crack the case and the suspect, who cannot be named as he is a grandfather of the victim, was soon arrested.
Nabbed
He said the suspect was arrested on 12 November last year and made his first court appearance three days later.
“[The accused] was denied bail and the matter was transferred to Chief Albert Luthuli Regional Court sitting at Elukwatini on 3 June 2022 where he was found guilty on 24 October 2022,” Mohlala said.
He said the grandfather was also found unsuitable to work with children and unfit to possess a firearm, adding that his name will be entered into the National Register for s.e.x offenders.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Daphney Manamela welcomed the sentence and applauded the dedication and cooperation displayed between members of the Investigation team, the prosecution team, and the Judiciary.
She cautioned parents to be extra vigilant as some of these perpetrators happen to be their own family members.
Mother from hell
Earlier this month the Pretoria North Magistrate Court sentenced a 39-year-old Dorandia mother to four life terms for the multiple s.e.xual assaults on her five-year-old daughter.
She was found guilty of four counts of r@pe, two counts of s.e.xual assault, and three counts of the creation of p0rn0graphy, as well as exposure to genitals.
The mother committed these acts on her daughter with her boyfriend for their “twisted” pleasure.
She was also ordered to be registered on the National Register of S.e.xual Offenders and to be declared unfit to work with children.
From December 2021 to March 2022, the couple would repeatedly r@pe the child with objects, s.e.xually assaulted her, and force her to perform sexual acts on them.
