The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) is closing in on licensing officials and driving school operators involved in the issuing of fraudulent driver’s licences.
In the latest bust, 11 people were arrested by the Hawks in a sting operation spanning across three provinces.
The licensing officials from Gauteng, Free State and Mpumalanga were handcuffed for alleged fraud and corruption earlier this week.
It’s understood the suspects were unlawfully issuing driving licences and roadworthiness certificates to applicants for a fee.
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said that more arrests are expected.
“Scores of licencing officials, including driving school instructors, have been arrested. This follows three years of investigations. Links were made with licencing centres in Rayton in Gauteng, Ladybrand in the Free State, Phalaborwa in Limpopo, and Elukwatini in Mpumalanga. The majority of the arrested officials are based at Lengau Testing Centre in Bloemfontein.”
The group is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
