The Ministry of Information, publicity and Broadcasting Services has dismissed a statement by Presidential Spokesperson George Charamba that President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Twitter account must not be fully believed as some of the things going there do not reflect the President’s views.
“The President was drawing my attention to an attempt to as it were, to put words into his mouth using his Twitter account. So, don’t always believe that which is coming through.” Charamba told journalists on Wednesday.
However the Ministry said everything posting on the account is expressly cleared by the President.
“There maybe be many fake accounts in HE President Mnangagwa’s name but @edmnangagwa is the legitimate voice of the President. Nothing goes on there but that which represents his views and positions on issues and that which he has explicitly cleared.”
Human Rights lawyer Dr. Pedzisayi Ruhanya said the contradiction show a lack of cohesion in Mnangagwa’s team.
“So what is George Charamba saying? Does Zimbabwe deserve this confusion?”Asked Ruhanya. “Emmerson Mnangagwa and the Information Ministry call for dialogue but George Charamba disputed twitter handle. Elite contradictions, discohesion probably.”
A social media user JJ said ,” We are not kids guys. Charamba discredited @edmnangagwa in an interview at Statehouse. Until the President himself confirms, in a video, that the @edmnangagwa is his account and that it reflects his positions on issues, I’m not going to believe anything on that account.”
The confusion comes after reports that the Media section of government is divided into factions aligned to President Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.
Charamba is accused of being close to the faction aligned to Chiwenga and they want to create their own narrative using even the state media.
Earlier this week Herald Editor Joram Nyathi was suspended for putting President Mnangagwa’s story on Page 2. Reports indicate that the suspension was engineered by the Charamba Team who took advantage of the mishap so that they bring back Editor at Large Caesar Zvayi to put their narrative at the Herald.
