Samwu says municipalities not ready for Level 3 lockdown

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) says municipalities aren’t ready for Level 3 on Monday, especially those in hotspots. It’s asked members to refuse to work if their health and safety can’t be guaranteed.

Samwu says some municipalities haven’t distributed personal protective equipment. They claim there is no budget and no help has come from national government. Other municipalities have asked staff to buy their own.

Samwu says the failure to provide the correct safety equipment has led to almost 200 municipal worker infections and two deaths.  Coronavirus Hotline Number: 0800 029 999 from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday.
