5 ANC Limpopo members who died in bus accident laid to rest

The five African National Congress (ANC) members from Limpopo who died in a bus accident on the way to the party’s birthday celebrations last week were laid to rest on Saturday.

Mashao Setabola, Mosima Makganyoga, Mapula and Margaret Rakubu, and Manti Mapfomo died while travelling in a convoy to Mbombela Stadium for the ANC’s 112th birthday rally.

One bus crashed into the other, pushing it over an embankment.

The governing party’s Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula and Treasurer-General Gwen Ramokgopa attended the funeral service at Botlokwa village.

ANC provincial spokesperson Stan Mathabatha was also at the event.

He used the opportunity to rubbish claims that he left the ANC to join uMkhonto weSizwe, currently being backed and campaigned for by former President Jacob Zuma.

Mathabatha, reacting to tabloids that were making the claims in both English and Sepedi, said he would die a member of the ANC.

“I belong to the ANC – the ANC brought me up, the ANC made me what I am today. I am what I am because of the African National Congress, so there’s no way in which I can leave this glorious movement. So that tabloid must take its rubbish back to where it came from.”
