Employer: Stellenbosch University

A strong teaching and research team in Structural Engineering needs a candidate to manage the concrete and structural laboratories of the Department of Civil Engineering.

The work consists of academic supervision of experimental research, scheduling of experimental work, maintenance and upgrading of equipment, supervision of experimental work with sophisticated equipment,
and managing the laboratory personnel and finances. The design, scheduling an execution of specialised experimental contract research is encouraged.

Duties:

Scheduling all activities in the laboratories;
Assisting with the planning and execution of experimental research;
Managing the maintenance of equipment and machinery;
Undergraduate teaching by means of practicals and demonstrations;
Managing the laboratory’s finances;
Implementing and enforcing the safety guidelines.

Required Skills:
Excellent verbal as well as written communication skills in English
Social skills: ability to work with students, other personnel in the laboratory and senior academic
Management skills: ability to manage a small team of laboratory technicians

Candidate Requirements:

BEng or BScEng in Civil, Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering;
Postgraduate qualification in Engineering (MEng or MScEng) and committed to enrol for a PhD within one year of working at the Department of Civil Engineering at Stellenbosch
University (SU);

OR

Currently enrolled for MEng and committed to enrol for a PhD at the Department of Civil Engineering within a year after appointment;
At least one year’s experience in a laboratory environment;
At least one year’s experience of working with hydraulic and electric machines and instrumentation;
At least one year’s experience of working with concrete materials;
Excellent verbal as well as written communication skills in English;
Social skills: ability to work with students, other personnel in the laboratory and senior academic staff;
Management skills: ability to manage a small team of laboratory technicians;
The ability to independently perform tasks of high technical complexity encountered in the laboratory management position, including prioritising and scheduling test programmes, designing experimental setups, writing technical test reports, etc.

Recommendation:

Minimum of three years’ experience working with concrete materials;
Driver’s licence for light motorised vehicle.
