KZN police concerned over increased cash-in-transit heists

The police in KwaZulu-Natal have raised concerns over the increasing number of cash-in-transit (CIT) heists following a recent incident on the N2 near Queen Nandi Drive in Durban. Early this morning, a cash van was attacked by robbers who used explosives to blow up the van’s door.

The assailants also engaged in a shootout with a police officer who happened to be nearby. The officer returned fire but escaped unharmed.

The robbers, who were armed with AK47 and R5 assault rifles, managed to flee the scene, prompting a manhunt. Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda indicated that the robbers had detailed knowledge about the cash van’s schedule and route, suggesting possible inside information. He emphasized the need to identify the source of these leaks to curb such crimes effectively.

This incident is part of a troubling trend in the region, as highlighted by recent police operations targeting CIT robbery suspects in KwaMashu and other parts of Durban. The police and CIT Association are working closely to address these crimes, but the persistent threat underscores the need for enhanced intelligence and preventive measures.
