KZN Police Commissioner reiterates that officers won’t back down from suspected criminals

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has reiterated that officers under attack will not back down from suspected criminals.

In the last two weeks, several shootouts have ensued in the province with 17 criminals shot and killed by officers.

The latest incident on Friday saw three suspected hijackers killed during a high-speed chase in Umlazi, south of Durban.

A police officer was injured in the incident.

“We don’t courage heavy-handedness of the police, we always encourage members to operate within the confinement of the law. You respect human rights and threat everyone with respect, that is why there are some many criminals in prison.”

Mkhwanazi said that all they want to do is apprehend suspects in a bid to curb the alarming crime rate in the province.

He said while some suspects cooperate with officers and surrender to arrests, others do not.
