KZN mayor in trouble over COVID-19 stats
The Mooi Mpofana Local Municipality mayor in KwaZulu-Natal is in hot water. He recorded and circulated a video of himself giving out statistics about COVID-19. Provincial authorities say his actions are illegal because only the Health Department can announce such figures under the Disaster Management Act. Duma’s defence is that he was merely conducting a COVID-19 awareness campaign.
“Please protect yourselves, be extra careful. This thing is serious, please stay home,” he said in the video. Provincial authorities are reading the riot act to all councillors and others who want to share information about the virus.
“In Mooi River, before we could even talk about it as the department of health, councillors were making voice notes, making videos confirming that there is a case in Mooi River,” said KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu.
“We must indicate that this is something that is extremely illegal because while we are dealing with COVID-19, the rights of patients are still protected. KwaZulu-Natal has the fourth-highest number of infections in the country.
