Christmas comes early for KZN flood victims

Christmas has come early for the KwaZulu-Natal flood victims as they are finally being moved from temporary shelters.

Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube is closing the seven remaining Mass Care Centres for the April flood victims.

This follows the provincial government’s assurance that they would be relocated by Christmas Day.

Most of the victims have been placed within the Durban city centre.

The floods left more than 14,00 people displaced and almost 5,000 of them were completely homeless.

Most victims ended up at community halls, with some living in sub-standard conditions.

The transitional emergency accommodation is more private, with each family getting its own room.

The government says it has already identified land to build permanent housing for the victims.
