Kidnapped Eastern Cape businessman rescued over 800km away! A 55-year-old businessman, who was kidnapped in Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape, a month ago, has been rescued more than 800 kilometres away from his home.

The dramatic rescue was part of an intelligence-led operation that resulted in the arrest of four suspects. Among those arrested were two South Africans and two Pakistani nationals, all of whom are now in police custody.

According to a preliminary police report, the businessman was kidnapped in February by a group of individuals who posed as immigration officials.

The kidnappers reportedly approached the victim and claimed they needed to verify his documents. They then convinced him to accompany them to the nearest police station. However, after leaving with them, he never returned home.

Shortly after the abduction, the victim’s family received a ransom demand from the kidnappers, who insisted that they pay a large sum of money in exchange for his safe release.

Breakthrough in Johannesburg

Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk revealed that the first major breakthrough in the case came when officers tracked down one of the suspects in Killarney, Johannesburg.

“This suspect led the team to the location of the victim in Evaton, where two more kidnappers were arrested,” Van Wyk stated.

During the Killarney arrest, police also confiscated an unlicensed firearm, which they believe may have been used in the crime.

Following the Evaton raid, officers proceeded to Benoni, where they arrested a fourth suspect connected to the kidnapping.

Police also seized a vehicle believed to have been used in the abduction, marking a significant breakthrough in the case.
