Minister Kubayi expected to visit victims of Khayelitsha floods

Minister of Human Settlements Mmamoloko Kubayi, together with a team from her office, is expected to visit the victims of floods in Khayelitsha on Thursday.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin-Hill Lewis will join the minister and her team as they assess damages caused by heavy rains in the area, as well as the relief efforts for the people affected.

Several areas in Khayelitsha have been hit by heavy floods.

About 800 informal structures were flattened in Endlovini on Thursday, last week.

The minister and her team will start at the Harare Library Centre and then make a few stops in Khayelitsha’s informal settlement areas that have been badly affected by floods. This includes Kuyasa, Zami Mpilo and Victoria Mchenge.

Over 14,000 people are displaced, and the City of Cape Town is expected to conclude discussions with Human Settlements on the way forward to find accommodation for the victims.

More rains are expected to hit the Western Cape throughout the week.
