African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has thrown his weight behind Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa.
Mbalula said Ramokgopa must be given executive powers to run his department and end load shedding.
He was speaking on the sidelines of the ANC’s 4 day National Executive Committee meeting in Boksburg.
Mbalula’s comments come as reports suggest that there are battles between Cabinet ministers over the control of Eskom and the energy sector.
The Mail and Guardian reported that Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe were opposed to handing some executive powers to Ramokgopa, who was appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa to end load shedding.
But Mbalula said Ramokgopa should be given space and resources to run his department.
“We are not interested in fighting for territorial battle. Anyone who is doing that, the ANC will deal with it from this meeting onward. We didn’t appoint the electricity minister to struggle for power for whatever reason. We want a working relationship that is smooth and that intervenes.”
Mbalula further said South Africans do not care about ANC internal battles but are more concerned about the solutions to end load shedding.
“South Africans are not interested about territorial battles, but we are interested about what is it that we do to increase generation capacity in the country in the shortest possible time.”
