Thabo Bester returned to Kgosi Mampuru Prison

Convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester has been taken back to Kgosi Mampuru Prison.

This follows his appearance at the Mangaung Magistrates Court on Friday.

He was arrested alongside his girlfriend Nandipha Magudumana in Tanzania.

Bester has raised concerns about his safety in the custody of Correctional Services.

“It is important to also state that the mandate of Correctional Services is not simply just to house and rehabilitate inmates, it is also about their safety, of inmates, officials and of people who come into our correctional centres so if there was any threat to his life, we have to make it a point that such is eliminated and that he is safe,” said the department’s spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.

Bester at this stage faces a charge of escaping from lawful custody, defeating the ends of justice, violation of a dead body, and fraud.
