Kenville residents say it will be a while before they recover from fire destruction

While the rebuilding of the fire-gutted Kenville informal settlement is nearly in its final stages, some residents say it will be a while before they’ve completely recovered from the tragedy.
Its nearly a month since a pregnant woman died in the fire that also destroyed over 300 shacks in the area.
The government has kept its promise and delivered building materials for residents.
But having lost all their belongings, some residents say it will take some time for life to return to normality.
The publication revisited the area on Wednesday, as some community members pick up the pieces.
Most of the shacks that were ravaged by the inferno here in Kenville have now been rebuild.
The smell of ash and smoke still hangs in the air here in the small community.
And while some are happy that they are restoring their homes, others like Ayanda Mfeka say the rebuilding process has been difficult.
“I was not home when it burnt, so I lost everything. It is very difficult; we can’t even cook. Even electricity, we only got it back yesterday [Tuesday].”
Her neighbours also echoed her sentiments.
They say since this is not the first fire to hit the area, they are worried that they could once again be in the same predicament if another fire breaks.
