Suspected hydrogen explosion reported in Kempton Park

Another explosion has been reported in the Chloorkop area of Kempton Park in Gauteng.

It comes just a day after a huge blast in the Johannesburg CBD which left one person dead and scores more injured.

The cause and extent of the blast is still unknown. The process of a hydrogen explosion typically follows these steps:

Hydrogen gas accumulation: Hydrogen gas must be present in a sufficient concentration within an enclosed or confined space. Hydrogen is a highly flammable gas, and if it accumulates in the air at a concentration between 4% and 75%, it can form an explosive mixture.

Oxygen presence: Oxygen is required for the combustion of hydrogen. Air usually contains about 21% oxygen, which is enough to sustain the reaction.

Units are responding to reports of another explosion in Chloorkop. It’s believed that it’s a Hydrogen explosion

Hydrogen explosion occurs when hydrogen gas combines rapidly with oxygen in the presence of an ignition source, resulting in a sudden release of energy in the form of heat and pressure. This reaction is highly exothermic, producing water vapor as a byproduct.

One person was injured when a 48kg gas cylinder exploded at a business property in Chloorkop. The cylinder is believed to have contained ammonia.

According to DEMS spokesperson, William Ntladi, the explosion occurred in an enclosed and contained area.
