Lamola: Justice department working to tighten law to protect whistleblowers

Legislation is being put in place to protect whistleblowers in South Africa.

So said Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola.

He was speaking ahead of the State of the Nation Address on Thursday.

Several whistleblowers – especially during state capture – have complained that they were not protected, with many going into hiding.

Lamola said that the law is being changed: “As you are aware, there’s a loophole in terms of us helping witnesses who are under the Witness Protection Act, who are already going to testify in court.

“That is a loophole because when you are a whistleblower, the regulations including Protected Disclosure Act has got a loophole, how do we then protect? These are all measures that we are working on,” he explained.

With regards to the Gupta brothers, he said the process to have them returned to South Africa from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was still underway.

“They are still in custody, what we are waiting for is the date, the court date where the matter will be heard in the UAE to decide if they are extraditable or not which we hope is gonna sit soon. We are still confident that they will definitely come back to account for their issues here in the country,” said Lamola.
